Information Regarding How to Obtain Your Guard Card from BSIS
Step 1: Attend Your Initial Guard Card Class

At the end of class you will receive a packet that will include all the information you will need.Obtaining your guard card is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Class Requirements:
You must be 18 years or older to attend the Initial Guard Card Class
You cannot be on prole or probation (regular or summary),
have crimes of violence or, have restraining orders.
Additional Training:
The state requires an additional 32 hours of training
(16 hours to be completed within the first 30 days of your card being issued,
16 hours to be completed within 6 months of your card being issued)

Maintenance:
An additional 8 hours of continuing education will need to be completed once a year
known as a Guard Card Yearly Review.
A Guard Card permit will need to be renewed every 2 years.

What is a "contract" Security Guard?
Any person employed by a licensed private patrol operator who provides services as a security guard and is registered by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services as a security guard.
What is the difference between a Guard Card and a Proprietary Guard Card?
A Guard card allows you to work any security position in the state of California.
You are also able to carry a Baton or Firearms, so long as you have the required BSIS license and they are valid.
A Proprietary Private Security Officer is defined generally as an unarmed individual, (1) who is employed exclusively by a single employer, (2) whose primary duty is to provide security services for that employer, (3) whose services are not contracted to any other entity or person, and (4) who meets both of the following criteria:
• He or she is required to wear a distinctive uniform clearly identifying the individual
as a security officer, and
• He or she is likely to interact with the public while performing his or her duties.
Can I verify receipt of my Security Guard application?

If I lost my security guard registration, or it was destroyed or damaged, how do I obtain a duplicate?
You may request a duplicate registration by submitting a written request, explaining the circumstances, along with a $25 fee to the Bureau. Please allow six to eight weeks for replacement.

How do I notify the Bureau of my change of address?
You must notify the Bureau in writing within 30 days of an address change. Be sure to include your Security Guard registration number, name, previous address, new address, date of birth, and Social Security number. Please print or type information.

If the Bureau misspelled my name on the Guard Card, is there a fee for a new one?
You will need to a change of name form and submit it to BSIS with two forms of ID (ID, Birth certificate, Passport, ect). Once BSIS fixes your name you can request a duplicate card and pay the $25 fee.

Can a California Security Guard work for more than one employer?
Yes, as long as he/she is an employee, on payroll with the proper payroll deductions being made.
I have completed 832 PC training. Can I obtain a Security Guard registration?
No. In order to get the Bureau's registration/permit you must complete the Bureau's training.
Can an emancipated minor apply for a Security Guard registration?
No. The law allows no exceptions to the age requirement.
I am changing employers should I send in a new Security Guard registration application?
No. A guard registration authorizes you to work as a Security Guard for any Private Patrol Operator or in-house employer.
I was denied a Security Guard registration. When can I reapply?
You may submit a new application one year from the date of denial.
